AB OBJECTIVES: To investigate the predictors of unprotected anal
intercourse with casual partner/s (uaic) amongst a sample of
homosexually active men. METHOD: 2,583 homosexually active men (sex with
a man within the last 5 years) were interviewed about their sexual
practice, type of sexual partner/s, HIV test status, attachment to gay
community, knowledge of HIV/AIDS, and a range of demographic variables.
A multiple discriminant function analysis was used to distinguish men
who practiced u.a.i.c. from those who practiced 'safe' sex with casual
partners. RESULTS: Men who practiced u.a.i.c. were less likely to have a
regular male sexual partner, more likely to have had a large number of
sexual partners, and to have sought their sexual partners in a wide
variety of venues. They were more likely to be employed in trade and
manual occupations and to live outside Sydney and Melbourne. Knowledge
of HIV/AIDS, HIV test status and social engagement in gay community did
not distinguish between those who practiced 'safe' sex with casual
partners and those who practiced u.a.i.c.
